VPH2
Virtual pathological heart of the virtual physiological human
VPH2 is a European STREP project inside the 7th framework (Website), in which most of the engineering personnel of the SurgAid team is currently involved.
VPH2 aims to develop a patient-specific computational modelling and simulation of the human heart, starting from Magnetic Resonance Imaging, to assist the cardiologist and the cardiac surgeon in defining the severity and extent of disease in patients with post-ischemic left ventricular dysfunction (LVD), with or without ischemic mitral regurgitation.
The main task of the SurgAid team is threefold:
- to develop semi-automated procedures to quantify left ventricular endo- and epicardial borders over time;
- to develop a novel strategy to analyze the mitral valve anatomy and functionality from a series of rotated long-axis images of the left ventricle;
- to develop computational finite element models that will allow clinical decision making and planning of the optimal treatment for left ventricle-valve repair.
